War creates a singular context for military obedience and disobedience. If discipline remains the main strength of armies, the possibility of extraordinary disobedience highlights the importance of individual responsibility in front of unforeseeable combat circumstances. The conditions of this dialectic are enhanced in a democratic society and this phenomenon is representative of the challenges democracy itself is called to take up.
