Looking back at the movement that led to the multiplication of psychiatric care facilities and their emancipation from the framework of the asylum setting designed in the 19th century, the paper first reconstructs the various stages of the dissemination of psychiatric care and then shows how this movement led to a profound rethinking of what constitutes a care facility, in particular from an architectural point of view. Eventually, it indicates that this change led to a reorganisation of the administration of coercion, which largely moved away from the hospital setting.
