The European Union has long appeared as a technocratic organisation built on a series of public policies, but it has become more politicised since the 2008-10 euro crisis. However, its growing influence in the redistributive domain has not been the object of a democratic debate outside periods of crisis. For the idea of a sovereign Europe to make sense, an open reflexion is needed regarding this fundamental political change and what could be the meaning of solidarity between the member states.
