Contrary to the image one may have of de Gaulle, he was not really retrograde in terms of morals. Despite the conservative opinions of some top figures of his political family, he supported the legalisation of modern contraceptive means. He thus enabled the vote of the Neuwirth Law, which made it possible for French women to use the diaphragm, the pill and the intrauterine device.
