The street has never been a strong inspiration for historians although it has been a fundamental constitutive element since the beginning of the city. The street is first an organized space, lined with buildings that form the customary living surroundings. It is also the privileged setting of exchanges, trade and neighborhood solidarities. As the street is the theatre of power struggles, its history also carries a strong symbolic value.
