As the Republic was born in the street, the republicans in power in the nineteenth century could not simply repress all its manifestations without distinction. They therefore constructed the activist street as a place of factious subversion when it refused to accept a subordinated relationship with the established power. “Universal” suffrage became the only legitimate form of political expression, thus making the street both superfluous and suspicious.
