and its surprising resiliency as a political movement, “Trumpism”
remains particularly challenging to define as a political
phenomenon. From among the many labels that are used to describe
this movement, the authors of the introductory chapter choose the
term “illiberalism,” as the latter not only highlights the
continuity between Trumpism and the least liberal elements of
American history, but also captures the uniqueness of Trump’s
tenure as president of the U.S., including his staunch opposition
to the most politically, economically, and culturally liberal
aspects of American history. Trumpism may thus be viewed as the
American version of a new paradigm that is defining our times.

took many commentators by surprise. Trump’s personality and his
irreligiosity appeared to put him at odds with this constituency,
leading many to predict that he would fail to win them over. Yet,
observant white evangelicals and Catholics voted overwhelmingly for
the New York-based outsider. Their resentment vis-à-vis the
advances of the LGBT cause, as well as a sense that the Obama
administration in its second term had conducted a policy hostile to
Christians, gave Trump the opportunity to lead a revanchist
campaign centered around the promise of restoring America to its
Christian roots. In doing so, Donald Trump laid the ground for a
“Christianist” policy that only grew stronger during his
presidency. However, the constituency of observant white Christians
started to break up and some of them chose Joe Biden in the 2020
election. Comparing the results of the 2016 and 2020 elections
reveals a decline in polarization, which might signal a narrowing
of the God gap.

disruptive and unpredictable conduct of foreign policy, Donald
Trump did not break away from his predecessors as radically as is

for instance, followed Obama’s just as his brutal unilateralist
outlook was a sequel to George W. Bush’s first term. Donald Trump’s
most transgressive move, then, may have been his rejection of
American exceptionalism. Never since the early 1940s has a
president refused to contemplate the US as the leader of
democracies and to promote – if only through discourse – human
rights. The concept of exceptionalism rested on the belief that the
United States was uniquely blessed and ought to be a provider of
peace, stability and other services for the global commonweal as
well as for its own interests. Trump’s “America First” policy, it

fundamental but very recent event. Key investigations are still
taking place led by the Justice Department and by a bipartisan
congressional commission. The very definition of that event remains
a bone of contention between parties. This article attempts to give
several factors pertinent to what happened. It looks at the
tradition of violence among far right and militia type groups. It
explores the double crisis of the early 21st century in
America : the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the
Great Recession of 2008. Finally, the role of President Trump
himself is surveyed.

gerrymandering The 2010 elections had a tremendous impact
on US politics and one of the most important was putting the
Republican Party in charge of redistricting a majority of the House
of Representatives districts. The GOP had the historic opportunity
to influence the partisan makeup of the House for several electoral
cycles. However, a majority of numbers does not guarantee a
stronger political position. Paradoxically, this attempt at
creating a permanent republican majority could slow down the
emergence of a new conservative coalition that the demographic
evolution of the country has rendered urgent. The impact of
gerrymandering is therefore remarkable since it influences the very
nature of the power struggle between two parties and, in the end,
the rhythm of their ideological evolution.

strategic dilemma of the Democratic Party in response to the advent
of this white aristocracy. The party is strongly divided over the

presidency”, originally denounced by Arthur Schlesinger? Donald
Trump’s postures could induce some to identify them as a form of
authoritarianism, but this presidency is, on the contrary, the
symptom of a polarised political system torn apart by partisan
divisions, in which the executive’s actions are often thwarted.
While Barack Obama’s presidency also illustrated the limits of
presidential powers in a polarised partisan context, Donald Trump’s
illustrates what happens when the presidency itself is polarised.
It has become a mere shadow of the New Deal presidency. Henceforth,
the host of the White House’s plebiscitary powers seem limited to
the mobilisation of a narrow electoral base through the social
networks and the multiplication of administrative fiats.
