century, the Club Alpin Francais (CAF), founded on April 2nd, 1874,
draws attention because of its affiliation with women. At a time
when women were commonly excluded from sports-related
organizations, the CAF’s attitude toward women is surprising:
virile values associated with mountaineering and social stereotypes
attributed to women appear fairly incompatible at the end of the
19th century. Our research investigates the encounter between women
and mountaineering at the beginning of the 20th century, relying on
prior work in mountaineering history as well as scientific and
methodological arguments about the history of women. How did gender
differences transpire? Was mountaineering ever in a position to
influence the evolution of the feminine gender? Mountaineering
seems to have bolstered a new type of encounter where women juggle
between concession and transgression. Therefore, while conforming
to the rules dictated by male supremacy and to the republican
project of the CAF’s founders, women mountaineers gained access to
a totally new space of moral and physical activities for their
gender, in the name of hygiene, education and tourism.

Present in the activity at the same time that men, the women

This submissive attitude allows women to be tolerated and at the

in the form of an overview of French sporting federation licences
by gender between 2012 and 2017. It challenges the idea that girls
drop out of federations when they reach their teenage years. In
fact, proportionally, young girls do not abandon sport more often
than young boys; the gender differential in involvement in sports
federations develops during childhood. Moreover, the data shows
that since 2012 there has been a general steady progression in
licences for girls, where licences for boys have plateaued or
declined. Thus, although girls are no more likely to abandon their
sport than boys at adolescence, we may assume that their
socialisation to sport is at least as well consolidated, or even
better, than that of boys.

context to observe and analyze the inequalities between men and
women in sport. Examining the inclusion of women’s wrestling as an
Olympic discipline in September 2001 helps to understand the
hierarchy between wrestling styles, and thus also between genders.
Women’s wrestling was constructed as a specific style, based on the
myth of women’s fragility, with regard to the two wrestling styles
for men: freestyle and Greco-Roman. Analyzing the archives of the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the correspondence
between the IOC and the International Federation of Associated
Wrestling Styles (FILA), as well as meeting and commission reports
from the two organizations and interviews with FILA stakeholders in
the 1990s, sheds light on the tensions and gender equality issues
running through wrestling’s access to the Olympics. The entry of
female wrestling into the Olympics thus highlights FILA’s
difficulties in breaking through a power system based on the
hierarchy of wrestling styles, in a context where the IOC held
great power of persuasion, even constraint, and influenced the
orientation of sporting policies, particularly from the perspective

Sexual Careers and Sports PracticesIf the world of sport can be
considered as a place for male domination and the ’promotion’ of
heterosexuality, on the contrary, female team sports are
characterized by a ’permissive homo-sociability’ towards homosexual
practices. Numerous works testify to the relation between this
’permissive homo-sociability’ and the involvement in homosexual
practices. The present article aims at analyzing this process
starting with a long lasting ethnographic survey among a high level
basket-ball team composed of 9 basket-ball players (among whom, 6
are committed to homosexual practices) and of their homosexual
female coach. More precisely, this survey studies the modes of
construction of the career of a ’homosexual player’ by identifying
the stages, the contexts and the relational networks which
determine the acquisition of the technique and the taste for
marginalization. Nevertheless, ail the players under study do not
engage in homosexual practices and those who do maintain variable
relations with such sexual ways. Introduced in a second step, these
various homosexual practices are being structured through the
interaction between a System of specific dispositions and a
peculiar context.
