produces it, it must also be approached in terms of the unconscious
jouissance which underlies it. To decipher the symptom is one
thing, to cut into the jouissance that underlies it is quite
another. As we know, the symptom does not only put a meaning into
play, but it takes us back to the beyond of the pleasure principle
that exceeds it with regard to the compulsion to repeat. This is
all the more so when the symptom links the private to the political
and to the discontents of civilization. As we suggest in this
article, such a proposition invites us to reconsider these theses
of the pleasure principle’s beyond and of the death drive by
putting them into play in the contemporary framework of
neuroscience, according to the perspective that Freud himself
proposed at the end of his 1920 article.

neuroscience, showing how the concepts have evolved over time and
their link to psychoanalytic theory. Dreaming became a subject of
scientific study in the 1960s, with Michel Jouvet’s discovery
of paradoxical sleep. For some time, the hypnic mental activity of
dreaming seemed to take place only during this stage of sleep. As
time went on, various neurobiological models, presented by
Elizabeth Hennevin, were elaborated. Scientists Allan Hobson and
Mark Solms were able to prove that dreams occur at every stage of
sleep. According to another theory conceived by Jean-Pol Tassin,
dreams are more connected to waking than to sleep. However, Fabian
Guénolé and Alain Nicolas recently presented a number of reports
refuting Tassin’s theory. Psychoanalysts André Green, Bianca
Lechevalier, and Bernard Golse also contribute their viewpoints.
Along with many neuroscientists, the analysts believe that dialogue
between the neurosciences and psychoanalysis is finally possible
and desirable, to move from ideological conflict to epistemological
debate.

The advent of neuroscience in the field of mental health has upset
the balance between psychology and brain sciences. A great deal of
new knowledge has been learned about the functioning of the brain.
On the other hand, psychoanalysis, increasingly withdrawn in the
academic world, is criticized for its scientific inconsistency. The
vocabulary and in particular the references to the brain have
become the obligatory supports for considerations on the psyche.
Paradoxically, since the creation of the Society for Neuroscience
in 1969, the therapeutic contributions of neurosciences in the
field of mental disorders have been marginal. Psychiatry as a
practice is always based on the clinic, psychotropic drugs and
psychotherapies developed or discovered independently of
neuroscience. Despite the enthusiasm of early discoveries such as
changes in neurotransmitter dynamics in depression or
schizophrenia, no disease or mental disorder has found a consistent
and scientifically supported neurophysiological model to explain
its symptomatology or explain its development. The purpose of this
article is a historical and epistemological examination of this
extraordinary discordance. It describes from the conceptions of
psychic trauma the historical evolution of therapeutics and
conceptions in psychiatry until today. Starting from Thomas Kuhn
describing scientific revolutions, we wonder about the belief
character of adherence to contemporary neuroscientific discourse
and the factuality of its announcements.

Adolescent behavior and brain development : psychoanalysis and
neurosciencesCase Reports, anecdotal evidence, descriptive
epidemiologic studies, psychoanalytic and neuroscientific studies
converge to conclude that impulsivity, sensation seeking and risky
behaviours are common during adolescence. Epidemiological studies
put forward that not only adolescents (fifteen-eighteen years old)
but also young adults (eighteen/fifty five years old) are at
increased risks of dangerous behaviours. Structural and functional
neuro-imaging studies have shown that neural circuitry undergoes
major reorganization during adolescence and young adulthood,
particularly in those regions of the brain relating to executive
functions, the self and social cognition. Decreases in gray matter
volume during adolescence mainly reflect a massive reduction in the
number of synapses ; meanwhile, increases in white matter
volume reflect improvement of connectivity between distant regions
of the brain, studies showing that the brain undergoes major
microstructural changes during adolescence, and indeed beyond. Two
different approaches to the « tendency to act » during
adolescence are expressed in both neurosciences and psychoanalysis.
One of the most widespread conceptions hypothesizes that this
tendency results from some deficiencies, namely a lack of
mentalization, for psychoanalysts, or an inability of the
prefrontal cortex to exert a mature control over the emotional
brain – the limbic system – for neuroscientists. Hence adolescents
could be dominated by their drive or their emotions. The other
conception, that we follow and we develop, is that the relative
unbalance between emotion and cognition during that period, if any,
allows a fine tuning of the brain structure through adjustment of
connectivity and functionality of the prefrontal regions. From an
evolutionary perspective, the last brain regions to mature in a
given adolescent are also the last brain regions to develop
phylogenetically. Taking into account gregariousness and social
conformism of adolescents, the « tendency to act », often
described in pejorative terms referring to their consequences as
« risky behaviors », helps to edify a social brain
adapted to the adulthood of a new generation.

Reflections on the link between psychoanalysis and neurosciencesCan
one examine, in the light of recently acquired knowledge in the
field of neurosciences and cognitive neuropsychology, their points

works of François Ansermet and Pierre Magistretti, this article is
based on the contributions of E. Kandel, who defends the idea that
a biology of the spirit can be used to support psychoanalysis (and
vice versa), and on the proposals of L. Naccache concerning the
neurocognitive approach to the Freudian unconscious. Today
attention is focused on questions of the compatibility and
incompatibility of the objects under study, and of the methods and
