an emotion insufficiently studied in the field of social work.
However, shame is one of the most formidable emotion, both of the
individual and collective level. In our contemporary Western
societies, the myth of the Homeric actor produced a stigmatization
of the social work users. Defined through depreciated archetypes,
the social designation bond linked to their non-conformity exposed
them in an explicit experience of shame, especially when they enter
into relationship with social workers. This article presents the
results of a realistic evaluative research of an original social
practice of cultural mediation, Cultures du cœur-Québec, through
which we identified social intervention implicitly using shame, and
others which contain the potential to disengage users from the
harmful aspects of this emotion.

shame in the access to social rights in FranceBased on the study of
the practical modalities of the access to social rights in France,
the paper analyses the different forms of the politicization of
shame that is taking place in France in the context of public
action against poverty and inclusion. On one hand, it shows that,
by considering the shame as an effective explanation of the
“non-take-up” and the “non-use” by the people of their social
rights, and therefore by making it a matter of public concern, the
public actors have contributed to its politicization. But, on the
other hand, the paper points out the ambivalence of this public
action which is more material than symbolic and doesn’t target the
ordinary sense of justice of the people concerned, a sine qua non
condition for helping them to recover the capacity to think social
benefits as a right to be exerted. It also shows that this public
action is implemented in the context of a reinforcement of
suspicion and of increasing controls against the recipients of
social benefits. In conclusion, it shows that it’s more the
managing of shame than the empowerment of the access to rights
which is the focus, in France, of the political discourses on
poverty.

the chastity of women before marriage. Even though deflowering
before marriage might be experienced as a sexual liberation, it
often leads to the idea of virginity taboo transgression, thus
resulting in affects of shame and guilt, part of oedipal and
superego’s issues revival. In support of six clinical interviews
and projective tests, in the context of a research in clinical
psychology and psychopathology which is part of a psychodynamic
perspective with a double psychoanalytic and intercultural

Shame, lying on the border between a narcissistic and an objectal
position (as distinct from notions of guilt and extreme modesty) is
a very frequently encountered feeling in psychoanalytical clinical
work. Shame is both a factor in the construction of otherness and a
witness to the difficulty involved in such construction. While the
analytical psychodrama can provide a good method of approach (as
shown through some examples), tackling and treating this affect can
nonetheless prove to be especially complex, involving real
resistance to psychoanalysis. Its effect on the individual and on
the group are such that it is essential analysts remain very much
aware of it, since it requires the absolute presence of the other
for one to recover from it.
