This article accounts a peculiar social experience involving its
two authors: a block’s occupation by 250 exiled people. The main
character of such experience is “Amphi Z”, an heterogeneous
community of some migrant people and folks supporting them. So, two
political combats – for the right to housing and for exiled
people’s rights – merge in “Amphi Z”, which is a testing ground of
an original way of living together. In order to endorse the vital
controversy and the plurality that are necessary for “Amphi Z” to
work as an in-progress institution, all its members have to
question the sense of their coexistence. Such question stays at the
core of this writing process : why are we here, what’s keeping us
together ?

Summary What we see emerging to the forefront of the social scene
in our modern world are the intertwined figures of precarity and
prejudice. Here we seek to determine what psychoanalysis can grasp
as to the specific nature of this position in its unconscious
dimension. This comes down to getting a hold on the dimension of
unconscious demand engaged, beyond the stereotype of the social
discourse on precarity and exclusion. This dimension finds
expression in the « exceptionality syndrome» identified by
Freud, that is those patients who argue traumatic trials
experienced in the past to deny any renunciation, even partial,
likely to help make progress in the cure, claiming a position as an
« exception » in the name of a right for symbolic
compensation. Backed up by real suffering, this position comes down
to encysting a pleasure that blocks the subject’s progress towards
his or her divided truth. This engages the subjectivated form of
« cultural malaise », or « hostility to
culture » and bringing ideals to a crisis point, together with
the posture of the analytical act in the condition of the symptom
and social demand.
