Adolescents suffering from anorexia nervosa regularly describe
conflicting sibling relationships. The Brothers Grimm tale Hansel
and Gretel features a pair of siblings confronted with family
issues similar to those found in eating disorders. A compendium of
human experience accumulated since the dawn of time, fairy tales
hold knowledge about the human psyche, which has served as a
framework for generations of children who have reconstructed
themselves before sleep. This study aims to uncover sibling
psychopathological issues in eating disorders through the prism of
this tale. It turns out that five major issues emerge: separation
issues, devouring anxieties, the differentiating process, emptiness
anxiety, and finally the one that seems to be the most central,
although less explicit: the outcome through the adelphic link. The
discussion on the psychic solution contained in the tale is
illustrated by clinical vignettes.

ideals, becoming a monk implies relinquishing one’s carnal
brotherhood for a spiritual one. The present paper presents the
example of Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), who converted all his
brothers (who followed him to Clairvaux) and his sister (who became
a nun in the Benedictine monastery of Jully). The conversions were
some time conflictual, but they allowed the future saint to make
his carnal and spiritual kinship coincide. This even lead him to
propose a definition of the hierarchy between the different bounds
of kinship in a famous sermon on the Song of Songs, dedicated to
his brother Gerard’s death. The example of Bernard can be read as a
symptom of how the representation of kinship was reorganised in the
time of Reformed monachism. It was also used as a model for images
representing spiritual kinship in the xivth and xvth centuries.

raise the question of the sibling relationships being
able to emerge between members of the same foster home. The
purpose of the present investigation is to bring
a lighting on that issue and to examine the
existence of singular sibling relationships between members of
a foster home, especially between children at the
time when the sociological debates on that
issue are mostlty directed towards how to
understand the multiplication of the fraternal figures in
recomposed families. These sibling relationships in foster
family makes it look like a mere community of life,
a construction of memories and a division of the time of
childhood. It makes it clear that

THE SIBLINGS LINKS IN FAMILY THERAPY The aim of this discussion
paper is to study in depth the sibling relationships within the
framework of a familial therapy. It starts from theorical
conceptions on the sibling bonds from R. Kaës and on the
« groupal illusion » from D. Anzieu, as well on the
notions of « generational gaps » within a family. The aim
is to show the accuracy of a familial psychological therapy from
the case of a 4 boys-sibling. The eldest is carrying
parents’traumas and is considered as the « scapegoat » of
the family. One can speculate on what allows us to understand the
importance of the trauma according to the place each child have
within the siblings. A could have « non-negative pact »
might have been established as organizer of the ties between the
brothers. The familial therapy underpins the need of the
metabolisation in the family. It also demonstrates the need to work
on a differentiation between the brothers, by dint, in this case,

The fraternal bond put to the test by incestWhen the spoken word
reveals a situation of incest, it projects the family onto a
different stage: that of the unintelligible, the unnamable, that of
the medico-legal system, justice and sometimes, the media. For each
member of the family, it is a crisis without precedent. Our aim is
to envisage the repercussions of incest on the fraternal bond and
what the sibling group can represent for the children involved,
whether they are abused or not, both as a factor of vulnerability,
but also as a source of creativity which may be able to help them
gain distance from the traumatic impact of this fundamental
transgression. In the first part of the article, we will recall the
dynamics of fraternal bonds, then we will describe the possible
consequences of incest on the fraternal process before addressing
the question of treatment possibilities. We will limit our
discussion to situations in which the perpetrator is one of the
parents and to cases where abuse is not committed by another
sibling, since such a situation would necessitate a specific
analysis. (De Becker, 2005 & 2010; Haesevoets, 2000).
