Els Witte, Professor Emeritus at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and member of the Royal Academy since 1988. Rector of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel until 2000, she is the author of numerous books and works on the political aspects of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Belgium. She is founder of the Centre de recherches interdisciplinaires sur Bruxelles.
